Keeping the historical record in view

We are adding this source to make it easier for readers to explore the public record for themselves. An archive link gives readers something a social-media excerpt cannot: a place to check the original context, attribution, and limits of a report.

When reading historical journalism, keep several questions in view. Who is speaking? Which statements are personal recollections, which are independently established, and which are disputed? Does a passage describe conditions at the time of publication, or provide evidence about the present?

These questions are useful regardless of whether an account feels familiar. A meaningful reading does not require treating every reported claim as a settled finding or assuming that an old description remains current.
